Placemat Pillow Cover {Tutorial}

It’s the fall again, and one of the easiest ways to change the mood of your home is to add some new pillows {or pillow covers}.

I’ve been searching high and low for the the right pillows, but I’ve been having a hard time finding just the right ones, at just the right price.  Until yesterday when I ran across this, not a pillow but a placemat!  I loved the colors and texture, and I wondered how easy it would be to make into a pillow cover.  I was going to buy two and sew them back to back, but then I realized something spectacular – there were two layers of fabric on this placemat and both sides were thick enough to work for a pillow cover!  I was so excited!!!

So for only $5, I was able to recover my pillow in a matter of minutes, and with out my sewing machine!

Here’s how to make it:

+  Placemat {double sided}, or a table runner would work too.
+  Pillow the same size as the placemat
+  Seam Ripper
+  Matching Thread & Needle

STEP 1 //

Use your seam ripper to open one end of the placemat, but leave about an inch on either end still sewn together {maybe a little less if you have trouble getting the pillow into the placemat}.

STEP 2 //

Insert the pillow into the placemat between the layers of fabric, then pin the opening together, making sure to fold in about 1/8″ for a clean closure.

STEP 3 //

Using your needle and thread, sew the end of the placemat shut.  I used the “ladder stitch” or the “invisible stitch” {view a tutorial here}.

Then you’re done!  It’s that easy!  And depending on your sewing skills, this can be done in less than 15 minutes.

What a fun, quick way to add a pop of color for the fall, or any season, and save money at the same time!

  1. Love this quick but beautiful project! This would be wonderful to add a pop of color to your bedding, and you could easily find a placemat that would fit your color scheme. Thanks so much for sharing this project, Katy!

    1. Hi Paula! Unfortunately I purchased that one from the Pottery Barn Outlet a few years ago, so it’s probably unavailable now. But it has been one of my very favorites {and I got it at such a good price!} They have one currently “Riley Floral Pillow” that is similar, but about $50. World Market has some similar ones right now for only $20-$30!
